Biography

Christian de Portzamparc (b. 1944) is the French Pritzker Prize–winning architect (1994, the first French architect to receive the prize) responsible for One57 (2014), the 1,005-foot Extell condominium at 157 West 57th Street that effectively launched the Billionaires' Row supertall corridor. One57's sculptural massing — a faceted glass cascade with multiple setbacks producing distinctive silhouettes from Central Park — remains among the more architecturally ambitious of the Billionaires' Row towers. De Portzamparc's broader portfolio includes Cité de la Musique in Paris, the LVMH Tower in Manhattan, and significant cultural commissions in Europe and Asia. One57 stands as the first major American residential commission by a contemporary European starchitect of his stature, and the building's pricing history through the post-2014 luxury cycle is now a primary reference for the broader Billionaires' Row corridor.
