8 Spruce Street (New York by Gehry)
8 Spruce Street, New York, NY 10038
- Year built
- 2011
8 Spruce Street is Frank Gehry's first skyscraper — and was the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere on opening. The undulating stainless-steel facade has been compared (by Gehry himself) to "laundry caught in the breeze."
Per Carter Horsley: "It is as majestic as its cross-town rival, the great neo-Gothic Woolworth Building." Nicolai Ouroussoff (NYT): "the finest skyscraper to rise in New York since [Eero Saarinen's] CBS Building."
Status flag: 8 Spruce currently operates as rental. The condominium conversion was abandoned after Blackstone-affiliated entity acquired the retail/residential condo for $930M.
