Glen Ridge Real Estate
Gas-lit streets, a compact borough and a concentrated collection of historic residential architecture.
Glen Ridge is a more contained alternative to neighboring Montclair. Its residential streets, historic houses and gas lamps give the borough a consistent visual identity. The center is modest in scale; the attraction is the continuity of the streetscape rather than a large commercial district.
History and architecture
The glen’s mills gave way to railroad-driven suburban growth. Late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century houses brought a range of architectural styles into a relatively compact area. The borough’s historical record emphasizes that transition from an industrial landscape to a residential one, with preserved buildings and streets carrying much of the story.
Transit and the NYC connection
Glen Ridge station is on NJ Transit’s Montclair–Boonton Line. The borough’s compact geography can support a rail-oriented search, although the actual walking route and scheduled service still vary by address and departure. Nearby Montclair and Bloomfield expand the commercial options.
The property market
Buyers are choosing an established architectural environment as well as an individual house. Condition, additions and the relationship to the street should lead the comparison. For a seller moving into NYC, the house’s value can be considered alongside the apartment’s purchase costs and ongoing building charges.
Property tax
About 1.79% of the purchase price a year: roughly $35,800 on a $2M house, within a range of $28,600 to $43,000.

A sale does not reset the assessment here, so the seller’s current bill is the number to underwrite. Ask for it, and check for exemptions (STAR, senior, veteran) that will not transfer.
