New Jersey Real Estate
Selected northern New Jersey towns: railroad suburbs, established downtowns and Bergen County house-and-land markets.
Northern New Jersey offers several distinct NYC connections. Montclair and Glen Ridge combine older architecture with a rail-linked suburban setting. Millburn–Short Hills, Summit and the Chathams follow the Morris & Essex corridor. Ridgewood centers on a Bergen County downtown, while Alpine and the Saddle River boroughs place more emphasis on the grounds surrounding the house.
How the towns developed
Much of the residential landscape grew around nineteenth-century railroads, older farming settlements and industrial centers. Victorian houses, Tudor and Colonial Revival architecture, planned residential enclaves and postwar construction now share that geography. Glen Ridge’s gas lamps and Montclair’s varied historic houses offer a different streetscape from the larger residential sites along the Palisades.
Getting into NYC
NJ Transit’s lines do not all provide the same Manhattan journey. The Morris & Essex and Montclair-Boonton networks differ from the Raritan Valley and Main/Bergen County arrangements. Some trips involve a connection; some covered boroughs have no active passenger-rail station. Compare the actual departure and city destination rather than use one commute claim for northern New Jersey.
Choosing and valuing a house
A strong downtown, a particular architectural period, more land and a convenient river crossing can lead to different towns. The profiles introduce those choices and distinguish similarly named places, including the two Chathams and the two Saddle River boroughs. An NYC sale or purchase can be planned alongside the local transaction, with valuation and cost estimates kept specific to each property.
