Ridgewood Real Estate
A Bergen County village with a central rail station, a substantial downtown and established detached-house neighborhoods.
Ridgewood’s appeal begins with its center. The station, shops and civic spaces give the village a recognizable focal point, while residential streets extend into a larger detached-house market. It offers a different Bergen County setting from a road-oriented estate enclave.
History and architecture
Railroad growth helped shape the village from an earlier farming settlement. Older houses and successive revival styles created the residential fabric around the center, with later development extending it outward. The combination of architecture, mature streets and a useful downtown is more important than any single historical label.
Transit and the NYC connection
Ridgewood is served by NJ Transit’s Main and Bergen County lines. Manhattan-bound rail travel generally involves a connection, such as at Secaucus, rather than a train terminating in Manhattan from Ridgewood itself. The connection and the local station approach should both be included in the comparison.
The property market
For an NYC buyer, Ridgewood can offer a house while retaining a strong town-center relationship. A valuation should distinguish neighborhood, condition and access to that center. Sellers moving to Manhattan or Brooklyn can use the same process in reverse: price the local house and define the apartment purchase separately.
Property tax
About 1.70% of the purchase price a year: roughly $34,000 on a $2M house, within a range of $28,900 to $39,100.

A sale does not reset the assessment here, so the seller’s current bill is the number to underwrite. Ask for it, and check for exemptions (STAR, senior, veteran) that will not transfer.
