Westchester Real Estate

Hudson River villages, Sound Shore towns and inland house markets connected to NYC by three Metro-North lines.

Westchester is a collection of different house markets, not one uniform alternative to Manhattan. A village apartment in Bronxville, a Tudor near Scarsdale’s center, a Sound Shore house in Rye and a property on wooded grounds in Bedford answer different versions of the same question: how much should change when you leave the city?

History and architecture

River trade, farming and country estates shaped the county before the railroad expanded suburban development. The built record ranges from colonial houses and nineteenth-century villages to planned commuter neighborhoods, Tudor and Colonial Revival homes, and later modernist work. Irvington looks toward the Hudson; Larchmont and Rye toward the Sound; the northern towns retain more of the older rural landscape.

The rail map

Metro-North’s Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines provide three useful search corridors. Irvington is on the Hudson Line, Scarsdale and Bronxville on the Harlem Line, and Larchmont and Rye on the New Haven Line. Not every covered hamlet has its own station: northern and inland properties may begin with a drive to another center.

Finding the right market

Begin with the places that match the desired house and daily routine. A defined village center, a larger garden, a coastal setting and a more private approach can point in different directions. The town profiles explain those differences through local history, architecture and transport rather than rely on a countywide price label.

The NYC transaction

For an outbound move, the NYC apartment’s likely proceeds help define the next purchase. For a return to the city, the local house sale and the apartment’s ownership costs need separate estimates. Start with a valuation request or a buyer-and-seller cost calculation for the NYC side.
