Westport Real Estate
A Saugatuck River town with a downtown, coastal neighborhoods and a long connection to art and design.
Westport’s property market is organized around several landscapes: the Saugatuck River and downtown, the station area, the shoreline around Compo and the inland residential roads. That variety is the point. A house close to Main Street is a different proposition from a beach-area property or an inland retreat.
History and architecture
Trade and agriculture shaped the early town; a later arts community helped give Westport its cultural identity. Older houses, converted working buildings and twentieth-century design sit alongside more recent construction. The history is visible in the relationship between the river center and the dispersed residential settings, not in one uniform architectural style.
Transit and the NYC connection
Westport station in Saugatuck and Green’s Farms station serve Metro-North’s New Haven Line. Neither should be confused with the downtown Main Street area. The station choice and the local trip vary by neighborhood, especially between coastal and inland addresses.
The property market
The strongest search starts with the setting the buyer wants to use most: river-town access, beach proximity or greater separation. Valuations should make that distinction before comparing size and condition. For NYC owners, Westport can support either a permanent move or a two-home arrangement; the property and funding plan should reflect which is intended.
Property tax
About 0.92% of the purchase price a year: roughly $27,700 on a $3M house, within a range of $23,600 to $31,900.

A sale does not reset the assessment here, so the seller’s current bill is the number to underwrite. Ask for it, and check for exemptions (STAR, senior, veteran) that will not transfer.
