Biography

Rafael Viñoly (1944–2023) was the Uruguayan-American architect responsible for 432 Park Avenue (2015), the 1,396-foot Macklowe / CIM Group supertall whose square-grid white concrete facade and 6'×6' window punctuation are among the most recognizable architectural signatures on the Manhattan skyline. The building's design — a tower of identical floors stacked to extreme height — produced 104 residential condominiums across the world's tallest residential building at completion. Viñoly's broader portfolio includes the Tokyo International Forum, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, the Mahler 4 office tower in Amsterdam, and the 20 Fenchurch Street "Walkie Talkie" tower in London. 432 Park's mechanical-systems history (elevator outages, water intrusion, ongoing facade-defect litigation) has complicated its market reputation; see The Roebling Report's coverage for full analysis.
