One West End is, per Carter Horsley, "large and exquisitely detailed, and possibly over-detailed" — a structurally distinctive Pelli Clarke Pelli mixed-use complex with one of the most iconic architectural gestures in 2010s NYC residential development. Horsley's signature description: "very slick and elegant, bifurcated glass towers with slanted roofs sitting on, and partially sinking into, an irregular limestone base with a huge spear of diagonal braces stuck into its lower midriff that cantilevers significantly over the sidewalk."
The structural identity rests on three features. First, the Pelli Clarke Pelli architectural pedigree — the firm's broader work places One West End in a substantial international architectural tradition. Second, the diagonal-cantilever architectural gesture — the diagonal bracing supporting the cantilever has become the building's most iconic visual gesture, with the 26-story north component cantilevering 50 feet beyond the low-rise base and 70 feet above West End Avenue. Third, the 75-foot lap pool with dramatic diagonal columns — the lower component's glass facade "cuts" into the top floor of the limestone base, and its lowest level contains the major amenity floor.
Horsley's mixed verdict: "It is a scrumptious, gee-whiz building but did anyone involved with this project hear of restraint? Huh?"
